Bengaluru 7th January 2017 :Aimed at connecting individuals in academia, industry and government that share a common interest in neuroscience, Harvard South Asia Institute (SAI) and the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) is hosting a day long program on January 7th, 2017 : Knowledge Exchange Platform : Frontiers in Neuroscience.
The Harvard University South Asia Institute (SAI) engages faculty and students through interdisciplinary programs to advance and deepen the teaching and research on global issues relevant to South Asia.
This event is a part of a 2-week course in neuroscience for 25 undergraduate and post graduate technology students in Bengaluru from Dec 29th, 2016 to Jan 11th, 2017. This course is part of an exciting program sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Karnataka biotech and IT Services (KBITS), and run jointly by the Harvard South Asia Institute (SAI) and the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB).
The goal of this workshop course is to introduce the Indian students to the excitement of brain science. Advanced undergraduate (at least two years of study) and graduate students from any scientific/technical background related to the course from an institution of higher education in India have applied. An interdisciplinary approach on the problem of the brain will be particularly eye-opening for engineering and physical science students in India, who are traditionally insulated from biology.
With this vision, it becomes critical for students to interact with different players in the ecosystem, including relevant government bodies, and scientists/executives in industry. This motivated Harvard South Asia Institute to organize this Knowledge Exchange Platform. The panellists will include dignitaries from Science and Technology departments of government and representatives from information technology as well as medical devices industry. The panel discussion would be moderated by Professor Venkatesh Murthy of Harvard University and Prof Mukund Thattai of NCBS.
Founded in 2003 to further Harvard University’s engagement with South Asia, SAI is a university-wide research institute at Harvard that engages faculty members, students, and in region institutions through interdisciplinary programs to disseminate knowledge, build capacity, inform policy, and engage with issues that are shaping South Asia today.
With 2 billion people facing similar challenges throughout South Asia, there is a critical need for solutions and systems to support such a significant global population. SAI programs and projects are working to actively address issues of equity, sustainability, and livability. Through research conducted by students and faculty, to partnerships with governments and organizations to seminars held on campus and across the world, SAI is working to improve the lives of all people throughout the region and beyond.
Harvard University formally recognized the South Asia Initiative as an academic institute in 2013, signalling the university’s longstanding commitment to the region and the beginning of an exciting new era for South Asian studies at Harvard. SAI now serves as the premier center on regional studies, cross-disciplinary research, and innovative programming, pertaining to South Asia.
The B4 program aims to build a scientific research corridor and will engage scientists from India and Harvard through exchange programs. This program is a collaboration between the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB), Bangalore, India and the Harvard South Asia Institute, Cambridge, MA. It is supported by: the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and Department of Information Technology & Biotechnology and Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka.
