Karnataka Government sets aside Rs. 2.5 Crores in Grants for bringing out original 

IPs in animation


Each Original Idea will be eligible for a grant upto Rs.50 Lakh

Bengaluru, 14th May, 2017: The Government of Karnataka has announced Rs 2.5 crores grant for Intellectual Properties (IP) in the animation sector. The grant is aimed at developing world-class content for a global audience from Karnataka.    


The State Government will provide a grant of up to Rs 50 lakh to each of the IPs in the field of animation to promote creation of original content that will showcase world-class storytelling effects.  To support the animation, visual effects and gaming industry, the Department of IT ,BT, Government of Karnataka, plans to set up Center of Excellence in Animation in Bengaluru which will help build internal skill capacity, provide Pre and Post Production Support and have Incubation centers. 


State IT, BT Minister Priyank Kharge said: “The grant is aimed to encourage local and original ideas from across the State and put them before the global audience. Such IPs will position ourselves as creators of world-class content and not just services industry. We strongly believe that Bengaluru has every potential to create global content and offer an international platform for animation, visual effect and gaming industry.”


“Bengaluru is also famous for its track record in visual effect works on popular movies such as The Jungle Book , which won the Oscar for the best visual effects, and has a friendly eco-system for such industries,” added Priyank Kharge.


The grant to IPs in animation will be part of Idea2PoC initiative launched by the Karnataka Startup Cell. Idea2PoC is part of India’s first multi-sector Startup Policy launched by the Government of Karnataka in November, 2015. The Policy aims to nurture technology-based startups and product-based firms with the support of industry and investors. This policy would take care of early stage funding to boost scaling up of concepts and ideas to help in validating proof of concept as well as assistance in certification and other activities.



Karnataka State Government has taken many steps to support this industry and create the right policy to nurture talent and original ideas in animation. The State has a very successful Digital Arts Center Program (DAC) for beginners  which is now in its third year, while it has also supported 7 Fine Arts Colleges with Digital Labs, Curriculum and Train the Trainer programmes for 3 years and 11 more colleges have been enrolled for next phase.


The three-day GAFX 2017 event gave an exciting opportunity for people to experience the world of animation, games and visual effects starting from making of visual effects blockbusters like Baahubali, Fast & Furious 8, Jungle Book, Pulimurugun, Shivaay, Doctor Strange, to animation feature films like Moana, Finding Dory, The Good Dinosaur.
